![]() We had the foie gras ( supplement $30 ), it was a very small piece and it was just ok. ![]() The wagyu beef was good but you need to pay a supplement $100. We brought two bottles of wine ( $150 fee corkage/ bottle), we bought a nice bottle of chassage Montrachet at the restaurant. If you pay a lot of money, you need to be elegant. I know, we are in California but the restaurant is a little bit pretentious. We went to French Laundry for the dinner with my brother-in -law and his wife. Certainly European Michelin starred restaurants are often more expensive but I have never had a better dining experience. This defines (surpasses) Michelin 3 Star rating. Now when travel takes me to the Bay Area I hope I am able to get back in this nirvana. One other thing-there is a new online reservation policy. Next, we were treated to a visit to the new Kitchen. After the next table left and preparations were being made for the next seating, they wait staff IRON the table cloth after it was on the table. The French Laundry is interested in you enjoying the best meal and the dress code is indicative of their attention to detail. In response to this being a pretentious place-it is a SERIOUS culinary destination. The dessert course consisted of several selection and were outstanding. THe vegetables probably came from the garden across the street. The lemon ice cream dish was the best taste I have ever tasted. The caviar, and Waygu were beyond description. Since the menu changes I will not mention individual dishes but the was no good, better, best. The evolution through the meal was logical, and entertaining. Individual serving size was small-consistent with the understanding that the palate attenuated after a few bites. Manny was essentially assigned to our table. We had not selected the wine pairing so we selected a couple bottles. Our 6 person group was seated in a wonderful table with IRONED table cloth. It took 14 years to get a reservation (Thanks American Express) and went 12/30. If you can rate this less than 5 you are a fortunate person. ![]() But, for a once in a lifetime dining experience and great memories, it's well worth it. People ask- is it a good value? Huh? Of course not- not in the traditional sense of value for the money- no meal should cost ANYWHERE NEAR what that cost- it was ridiculous and embarrassing, quite frankly. All in all, it was a fantastic and memorable experience. As you put on your coat to go they handed us folders with the menu printed, and the wine pairing typed up, plus two tins with shortbread. The kitchen was not the frantic yelling and screaming you might expect- you could practically hear a pin drop in there. Thomas Keller was not there (but we did spot him the next morning in the garden prepping for the next day's lunch). At the end of the evening they invited us to go into the kitchen which was a really nice experience. So, major tip is to ask the sommelier how much she or he will be brining as part of the pairing. It actually inhibited our enjoyment of the evening a little bit. It ended up being way too much volume vs. But, the wine pairing included half bottles of wine. The pairing was great, but there was just way too much of it. We did choose to get a wine pairing, and from that we have a tip that we give everyone- please be clear to the sommelier about the VOLUME that you'd like to drink. I had no clue how someone so young could have risen in her field to this level. Honestly, she didn't look to be much more than 21 years old herself. The sommelier also was very down to earth. There was, though, a main waiter for continuity, which was nice. I have no clue how many people must be working here at any given time. There is a server for every course- a different person comes with each course. One of the servers talked about a mexican place in San Francisco we should try (Californio), and he later came back with a card with the name of the restaurant and address written down for us. At The French Laundry, everyone was extremely friendly and conversational. The very best places I've gone have tended to have super friendly service. I have found that the more formal and stuffy the staff is the more it's a wannabe fine restaurant. The service is much more friendly and down to earth than I would have expected. I'll list out a few things that surprised me (mostly for the good), and some tips. All the other reviews can go into great detail about the courses. ![]() Dining at the French Laundry was a long time bucket list item for us.

Presley was leaving for Las Vegas that night and told the two he would have to think about it. “We went up to the house and we talked for a bit, and I presented the idea to him.” Presley agreed to meet with them that afternoon. look at this we’ll call him right now,” Waite recalls. ![]() Waite first came up with an idea for doing a documentary on tournament life in 1974 and shared it with Parker, the instructor. They are there not so much to talk as to show their support for “New Gladiators.” Also sitting in are writer Joe Hyams, one of Bruce Lee’s first students and author of “Zen in the Martial Arts,” and Majeet Raz, one of Urquidez’s students. On a recent morning, Florentine, Warrener and Waite gather in Rising Sun’s cramped Beverly Hills office with three of the men in the film: Urquidez, a world-champion kickboxer who operates the Jet Center in Burbank Farkas, who wrote the Encyclopedia of Martial Arts and is owner of the Beverly Hills Karate Academy and Dave Brock, a seven-time karate champion. Several well-known martial artists of the period appear, including John Corcoran, Ticky Donovan, Emil Farkas, Roy Kurban, Ron Marchini, John Natividad and Benny “the Jet” Urquidez. The film focuses on several karate fighters in training and captures tournament action - two European team matches and the Urquidez Brothers Invitational in Beverly Hills. “New Gladiators” documents what fans know as the golden age of the sport, when martial artists were interested in the art of karate and not the glory or the money. The two are now distributing the finished product, “New Gladiators,” on video and DVD, and are hoping to interest Hollywood in a theatrical release. (None of the footage of Presley is in the movie because the Elvis Presley estate wouldn’t allow it to be released according to Warrener, the estate was unhappy with the singer’s less than flattering appearance.) Florentine and Warrener’s company, Rising Sun Productions, which distributes karate movies and other martial arts-related items, edited the footage down to 93 minutes. Waite had 50 hours of footage - including 33 minutes of medium-girthed Presley showing off his black-belt moves and eight minutes of Bruce Lee demonstrating karate in 1967 in Long Beach - in the back of his 1963 GMC pickup truck in his garage.Īnd there the project stayed until recently, when he gave the footage to Isaac Florentine, an Israeli-born director of action films, and Florentine’s partner, Don Warrener, who ran a chain of karate schools in Canada. “I kept it going until Elvis died,” says Waite, who studied with Presley’s martial arts instructor, Ed Parker.īut that wasn’t the end of the story. Presley was scheduled to co-narrate and demonstrate karate moves. “New Gladiators” was supposed to be to karate what Bruce Brown’s classic “The Endless Summer” was to surfing - a definitive film about the sport. Presley’s death also put an end to a karate film called “New Gladiators” that the singer had financed and that Waite - a self-described “karate bum” - had produced in 1974. Until recently, Waite had never shown it to anyone because the memory of his loss was so painful. The belt belonged to the King way back when, and Waite has had it since Presley’s death in 1977. It’s just a frayed, weathered, black karate belt, but it means the world to George Waite, the former president of TCB - Elvis Presley’s film company. ![]() The purpose behind most of what is shown on screen is all made obvious in the end, as Hur Jin-ho’s thoughtful direction is made obvious from his emotional compositions, although it is not the most narratively efficient. I wish that focus was even stronger, however, as it takes a while for the story engine to truly start running thanks to subplots we could have done without. It invites the viewer to question their role as decision makers for their kids, and to consider similar, unseen situations that may arise in reality. While I would have liked to see more of their kids’ perspectives, which felt excruciatingly important given the conflict at hand, I understand the choice to focus on the parents. With that being said, do not let the title mislead, and do not rush to choose a side! As brothers Jae-gyu (Jang Dong-gun), a doctor, and Jae-wan (Sol Kyung-gu), a lawyer, navigate their children’s teenhood with their spouses, the parents frontline tense familial battles between each other concerning rights, wrongs, and fatal consequences. This riveting family drama leads one down a rabbit hole of social facades and twisted morals that slowly meld with the escalation of its stakes. But when it comes to learning a hard truth, is it worth living in an ignorant bliss, or coping and moving on with life? Imagine making such a choice for one’s children this is the dilemma at the center of A Normal Family. ![]() (Written by Wyatt Frantz) Perspective tends to change when shown both sides of a story. Much like tasting snow for the first time, A Happy Day is an acquired taste, spotlighting a fresh voice in the cinema that sneaks up on the audience and explodes in flavor. Turning the confines of the camp into Zaman’s means for self-discovery, interpretive scenes treat its audience intelligently while staying well within the guidelines of its world. If the shoehorned poem recitals from the get go don’t make the thematic intention of the film clear, then an eventual explosion of expressionism will. Literal personifications of Hamid’s visions and thoughts make things only more interesting both visually and narratively, advancing the plot while also adding a great deal of character building and depth. Placing Hamid (Salah Qadi) at a crossroads, his balancing act between adolescence, pursuit of war-stricken happiness, and hallucinations of reindeer make it suddenly obvious that this is not a story that we have seen before. But once Aida’s (Sarah Aman Mentzoni) overdue appearance adds spice to the tired trap of our characters, my interest only grew until the credits rolled. The occasional indulgence in aggressively weird worldbuilding and character development feels out of place. Stiff performances from some of the cast and a lack of exposition struck me with a slight cinematic whiplash at first. Hisham Zaman’s completely original voice that strikes a perfect balance between the bright and dull sides of the story, using deadpan shots and an occasionally whimsical tone, feels vaguely reminiscent of a bitter Wes Anderson. Gunshots that pierce the air of the camp remind them of their unsure fate, but the beautiful, yet menacing snowy mountains looming over them remind them that there is another way. A desolate premise takes on a more effervescent perspective than one would expect, as a like minded community of teens find ways to enjoy their youth before being sent out into the world. ![]() (Written by Wyatt Frantz) Throwing its audience headfirst into the dense pit of snow that is Norway’s youth asylum center, A Happy Day takes confident strides in its uniquely stoic, yet absurd style of filmmaking. Talk to Your AccountantĮven if this post provided you a little more understanding of how taking deductions for assisted living works, you’re unlikely to figure out how to do so properly without the help of a trained accountant. If several siblings work together to provide support for an aging parent, they can still each take the amount spent in deductions if the amount of support they provided together exceeds 50% of the parent’s support. That doesn’t just mean their medical expenses, it includes food, utilities, and all general living expenses. It also means that you must have been responsible for over 50% of their support in the last year. That means their income can’t exceed the amount allowed by law for dependent status (a number that changes often – it was $4,000 in 2015). If you’re a caregiver paying for a senior’s care, you may still be able to deduct some of the expenses for tax purposes, but the rules are a little different.įirst, your loved one has to be legally considered a dependent. For anyone born after that date, the deduction floor is raised to 10%. That means if what you spend on medical care exceeds 7.5% of your income, you can deduct all expenses that go beyond that. The only way the government will see the whole stay as medical care though is if a doctor has recommended assisted living as part of a certified care plan for the patient. In some cases, if a senior is in an assisted living facility for reasons directly related to an illness or injury, the entire cost may become deductible. The assisted living facility should provide you with documentation that shows which of your costs are attributed to medical care. Usually what you pay for your room in the facility and your meals won’t be deductible, but any medical care you receive through the facility will be. Not all assisted living expenses qualify as medical expenses though, so the trick is to figure out which portions of your assisted living bill fall into that category.
